Born in 1940, in İstanbul / Turkey, Dr. Aydın Köksal, Ph.D. inComputer Engineering and University Professor in Software Systems, studied in Lycée de Galatasaray, from which he has graduated as the major of his promotion, and consequently has been invited to INSA (L’Institut National des Sciences Appliquées) de Lyon / France, where he obtained Le Diplôme d’Ingénieur en Electronique (1964).
Has dedicated all of his professional life to the development of the information technology in Turkey, in order to transform the turkish society into a modern information society, and has been accepted internationally as a leading figure being the Project Manager of the most important information systems projects in Turkey. He has successfully managed more than 90 projects, among them large scale governmental projects in Human Recourses, Budgeting and Financial Management and Materials Management areas, includind Banking Management Information Systems, Hospital Management Information Systems, School Management Information Systems, Ministries, General Directorates.
Founded and managed the Information Processing Center of Hacettepe University, a pioneer center in Turkey (1967-85).
Founded The Informatics Association of Turkey (IAT, Türkiye Bilişim Derneği, TBD in Turkish) in Ankara (1971). Today this association has more than 12,500 members in 2016.
Published the professional periodical journal Bilişim (Informatics in Turkish; since 1971, still published quarterly today); Dictionary of Informatics in Turkish (1980); and more than 280 articles and 15 other works.
Founded The first Ph. D. program in Computer Science and Engineering (1973); and the first Computer Science and Engineering Department of Turkey (1977), which he headed (1977-85), in Hacettepe University.
Founded Bilişim Ltd. in 1985 in Ankara (Bilişim Co., as of 2016), to provide governmental and private industial institutions for consultancy and software development services.
He has developed the Turkish terminology of informatics (circa 2,500 terms and concepts).
He has received The Science and Engineering Award of The Turkish Academicians Association (TÜMÖD, 1979); Best Monography/Essay Award of The Turkish Linguistics Association for his book entitled Language and Culture (TDK, 1980); The first TBD-TÜBİSAD Life-time Achievement Award, on behalf of Turkish Informatics Sector (1996); Honorary Member of the Foundrymen’s Association of Turkey (1996); Honorary President of The Informatics Association of Turkey (2003); Most Important Twenty Contributers to Technological and Innovational Development in Turkey, on behalf of Hewlett-Packard (2009); Informatics Prize on behalf of Istanbul Beykoz Rotary Club (2010); TDK Honor Prize for his contribution to the development of Turkish Scientific Terminalogy, in Bacou, Azerbaijan (Turkic speaking countries ad hoc committee meeting, 2010).
Contributed to the establishment of Interpro (with 26 major Turkish firms in 1992), of Turkish Informatics Foundation (1994), and of Tursoft (1994) to organize and support international large scale IT projects abroad.
Dr. Köksal knows at excellent level Turkish, English, French and Italian, and can work on documents, can read and speak in Spanish and German for professional purposes.
He is married with Prof. Dr. Gülden Köksal.
